Irishman arrested on Dublin-New York flight for not wearing a mask and dropping his pants

An Irishman was arrested for refusing to wear a mask on a Delta flight to New York for “disturbing flight attendants and other passengers,” according to the feds.

Shane McInerney, 29, could face up to 20 years behind bars on charges of interfering with flight crew duties and intentionally assaulting and intimidating a crew member during a Delta Air Lines flight from Dublin to John F. Kennedy Airport on January 7, authorities said Friday.

McInerney allegedly refused “dozens of requests” from the flight crew for him to wear a mask, and in absentia, “dropped his pants and underwear,” according to the criminal complaint.

Shane also “raised his fists at the captain” after placing his own hat on the pilot's head and said, “Don't touch me,” court documents say.

McInerney, of Galway, Ireland, "was a threat during the eight-hour transatlantic voyage," the feds added. He allegedly threw an empty beverage can that hit a passenger in the head, stormed into the first-class cabin to complain about the food he was given in economy class, kicked the seat of the person in front of him and refused to sit down for the final descent of the plane to New York.

The complaint says that “at least one passenger was appalled” by the Irishman's actions, and the flight crew even considered diverting the plane to a nearby airport to kick McInerney out.

McInerney flew to New York en route to Florida to start a job at a soccer academy in the state, The Guardian reported.

He was admitted to a hospital for medical and psychological evaluation after the flight landed, according to prosecutors.

McInerney was released on $20,000 bond pending trial and was required to seek mental health care at his arraignment Jan. 14 in Brooklyn federal court, according to authorities and reports.
