Wrap yourself up, but do it right.

Carmen Barreiro

After several weeks with a fairly benevolent time for the time of the year we are, it seems that the thermometers will receive the month of December with a generalized decrease in temperatures throughout the country. So better forgot for a season of ankle pants and canvas shoes if you do not want to stay like an ice scpanked when mercury is unable to climb above ten degrees.Brust, but do it well.«Actually, today it goes cold who wants. There are countless and very economical tissues in the market that preserve body heat phenomenal without going like an onion.Another thing is that by fashion or aesthetics you want to go cold, ”says the neurosurgeon and freezing specialist at the Maz de Zaragoza clinic, Ricardo Arregui.

If what really cares is not to get frozen as soon as you set foot on the street, then follow the advice of experts on how to shelter correctly and notice the difference. The doubts are many: is it better to wear many layers or get less clothes and invest in a good coat? Where does heat escape 'more? Why are there people more cold than another? Plumiferous or window? Let's go by parts. In the first place it is important to know that our body is designed to preserve blood flow in the trunk area, which is where we have vital organs (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys ...). «That is why when the temperature drops, the first thing that cools are the most remote parts of the trunk such as hands, feet or head. The body focuses on protecting and maintaining vital organs at the right temperature and say that it 'forgets' the less important areas for our own survival, ”explains the dermatologist Pedro Rodríguez, a member of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology ( Aedv).

That is why it is very important to cover those 'forgotten' parts well.A hat, gloves, socks and good footwear are fundamental to keep the body in tune.«Our ability to lose heat will always be proportional to the area we have exposed. That is, no matter how much we cope with a nickname, if we carry our ankles in the air, it will enter cold, ”says Rodríguez, dermatologist at the International Dermatological Clinic (Madrid).

Abríguese, pero hágalo bien

And the closer that area exposed to the trunk is, the more heat we will lose.Hence, instead of the ankles what we have on the air is the back or neck, the feeling of cold will be even greater."They are areas that do not have the mechanisms of adaptation of the feet or hands," adds the specialist.

One of the keys not to go cold is precisely to carry the trunk well covered."A good thermal shirt is essential to keep the heat of our body," Arregui says.Look at how football players wear very cold days. Most have a technical shirt below their equipment. Some even put meshes so that the thighs are not cooled. They are very comfortable garments that also expel sweat ».Of course, always well put inside so that not between the air anywhere.

Both experts are enemies of dressing with many garments, on top of each other.«It is uncomfortable and not very practical. It is best to carry a first technical layer, a sweater on top and a good coat.Nothing more is needed, ”both specialists agree. The choice of the outer garment will basically depend on the area where we reside. That is, if we live in a place where it is common for it to rain we must opt for a more technical coat that, in addition to keeping heat, protects us from rain. However, if we live inside, where the cold is drier and the lowest temperatures, a down can be a good option. In any case, it is recommended that they have a long three quarters and to be a hood.

Thermal sensation

In fact, the feeling of cold increases for two reasons;Wind and humidity, so we must be prepared to protect ourselves from both inclement. It is what experts call thermal sensation or 'Wind Chill'.«There are days when the street thermometer can mark 4 degrees, but our body feels them as two below zero for the effect of the wind.Something similar happens to the rain.Having wet feet one day of cold is the most unpleasant, so we must know how to shelter well, ”adds Arregui.

But why are there more cold people than others?«The ability to retain heat depends on the amount of blood cups we have.In the same way that there are families with a tendency to varicose veins, the less vascularization they have, the more cold they will be, ”says Pedro Rodríguez.

«He pasado más frío en Zaragoza que en el Everest»

For the more than 700 mountaineers who over recent years have passed through the Maz de Zaragoza clinic, the renowned neurosurgeon Ricardo Arregui is simply 'Kiko' Arregui, the doctor of the 'to the edge of the impossible'The freezing suffered in feet and hands by the rigors of the low temperatures.

- Himalaya, the North Pole ... You do know what it is to go cold.

- Actually, where I have spent the coldest in my life is in Zaragaza.I have been in this city for more than forty years and the only thing I have not acclimatized is in the wind of Moncayo.I remember going to the faculty thinking what streets I had to take so that the wind did not give me.When I went to the North Pole, I wore boots and calculated socks to support -100 degrees and did not go cold. Now, when you went out and you were breathing at least 30 degrees everything hurt.

- What garments should you invest so as not to go cold?

- Now you don't have to spend much money to go warm.Another thing is the high mountain. In that case, I always tell you the same thing: invest in good gloves and good boots. It's fundamental.

- With the hospitality closed in many communities and mobility restrictions, going to the mountain is one of the star plans of the weekend for many people.

–You have to be careful with this type of excursions. Many people think that hiking is to put on sneakers and walk, and not.You have to be well prepared and more at this time of the year because time is very changing. You can leave the house with a sun and when you get to the top a wind that takes away to ideas.Look at the mobile and dress according to weather forecasts.
