What happened to Checo Pérez at the Belgian GP?

Checo Pérez experienced a roller coaster of emotions during the Belgian Grand Prix. The man from Guadalajara had been left out of the race after the rain played a trick on him on the formation lap, so his car crashed into the barrier and the front wing knocked out the car. Then, the mechanics managed to repair the car in time thanks to the eternal delay due to the rain, so it would start in the pit lane after the restart, however, Sergio did not have the opportunity to climb positions.

The Mexican was doing his formation lap to take his place on the starting grid when he lost control of the RB16B on the wet track and crashed into the retaining fence.

Checo attempted to control the car, but was unable to avoid the collision. The man from Guadalajara got out of the car and moments later Red Bull sports director Jonathan Wheatley told race director Michael Masi that Pérez would not be able to start.

"The damage to the right front suspension is too extreme for us to continue," Wheatley said.

Checo Pérez and Red Bull had confirmed the contract extension for the 2022 Formula 1 season and he was going to start in seventh position, but if he did not start he would not score a single point this weekend.

"Obviously, it's very disappointing not to be able to start (with Perez) - it just shows how difficult the conditions are. For Max it doesn't change anything for him and his approach, but obviously, there are some pretty nasty conditions. It's one of those days where anything can happen," said Christian Hoerner, Red Bull boss.

After all this mishap, the Red Bull mechanics began to work hard to get Checo Pérez's car ready for the race. Fortunately, the suspension of the Belgian GP gave Checo Pérez enough time and his team so that they could adjust the car.

Together with Raikkonen, Pérez started from the pit lane following the safety car after the restart of the race, but three laps later, Masi decided to wave the red flag and end the actions. Officially, Sergio was ranked 20th.
