She spent the whole day in those 'shorts' and the next day she felt sore and noticed that she had a lump where the fabric rubbed against her buttocks.

Concerned, Sam visited a doctor and was prescribed antibiotics to treat what appeared to be a skin infection.

However, the drugs did not seem to work. On the contrary, her Sam began to experience tremors and shortness of breath, so her mother had to take her from the emergency room to a hospital where she was admitted to an intensive care unit, where she stayed for four days.

According to the diagnosis, she had suffered septic shock as a result of cellulitis (an acute skin infection that compromises the subcutaneous tissue).

Specialists considered cutting out the infected section on her buttocks, but the young woman managed to recover without surgery and was released.

Unfortunately, a month later, the cellulitis returned and she Sam had to be treated again with antibiotics.

Regarding Sam's case, colorectal surgeon Carmen Fong told BuzzFeed that such infections are most often caused by an anorectal abscess, "caused by an anal fissure or anal fistula, which are pretty common." Fong believes that the tight shorts would have caused a laceration in the young woman's skin that bacteria took advantage of.

The tight, moist and dark environment served as the perfect medium for these microorganisms to thrive, she detailed.

The doctor recommends wearing loose-fitting underwear and air-drying that area of the body whenever possible.
