Tom Ford, the genius who fused design and sexuality, turns 60

Luxury

Tom Ford dreamed of being an actor and tried his luck modeling in advertising campaigns while studying architecture, however fashion crossed his path and he achieved success mixing sexuality, sensuality and design, an explosive cocktail that revolutionized the fashion and his way of understanding it.

Since the 1970s, Tom Ford, who turns 60 this Friday, has generated a new culture of fashion and revolutionized the way of understanding it with some notes of elegant sexuality. Always impeccable, tanned, in a custom-made black suit jacket and a white shirt unbuttoned to the third button, the jean, Tom Ford is an icon of the textile world and author of "an explosive cocktail made up of sexuality, sensuality and design, well-defined ingredients that seduced everyone," fashion expert Pepa Fernández recalls to Efe.

Growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tom Ford moved to New York at the age of 17 with the idea of studying architecture and interior design at the prestigious Parsons School, but his dream was to act, to be an actor. He did some modeling work and realized that architecture and fashion had a lot in common. With some of her projects, she showed up at the offices of Cathy Hardwick and walked out with her first job at a fashion atelier. The 80s began when he settled in Paris to work at the Chloé firm where he ordered cabinets and made orders. A better contract with the Perry Ellis Company brought him back to America. His work there did not excite him, so he packed his bags again for Europe.

In 1990, one of the most exciting adventures of his life came to him: working for Gucci. She began by putting order in her old back room. Four years later he presented his first collection. In 1995, with designs for Gucci, she rewrote the norm of fashion, while bringing shine to the legendary Italian house with form-fitting satin blouses, bold logos and evening wear that recalled the best of Halston. Pinstriped suits for men and women, body-hugging shirts and a brilliant letter G, from Gucci, are the elements that make up the unmistakable image he created for the Italian house with which he got the company to go from a value of 230 million from dollars to three trillion.

At Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) he drew up a market plan in the image and likeness of Gucci, but adapted to the sophisticated Parisian 'maison'. In 2004 the Tom Ford era came to an end for both houses. "Ford's success lies in a mixture of American sensuality and commercial flair with elements of Italian craftsmanship," says the book 'ABC de la Moda', edited by Phaidon. And after the success, he slowed down his fashion creation and began to explore new paths with a beauty line for Estée Lauder and launched his Black Orchid, his first perfume.

In 2007 he opened his first store in New York's Madison Avenue with a complete collection of ready-to-wear for men. A success that he culminated two years later, in 2009, with his first film project: 'A Single Man' ('A single man'). In 2016 he released his second film 'Nocturnal Animals' ('Nocturnal Animals'). Currently, Tom Ford, with two films as a director, works on luxury at its best, albeit with subtle touches of sensuality.
