Motorcycles, especially those suitable for a car license, are the vehicles that suffer the most serious accidents and deaths in Madrid

The Madrid City Council has recently published the details of accidents that have occurred in the capital in which motorcycles go very badly when a clear relationship is established: more than half of the accidents with serious consequences or deaths correspond to motorcycle accidents.

Some data that is not surprising if we take into account that the people of Madrid made 9.3 million trips a day throughout the capital before the pandemic.

Motorcycle accidents main concern in Madrid traffic

The Community of Madrid has published the accident data that drivers have suffered in the first eight months of 2021. A year in which the return to normality should have been a turning point compared to the 2019 data, but unfortunately it seems that it is not so.

And it is that so far this year the total number of accidents that have resulted in a hospital admission of more than 24 hours or directly the death of the victim, has risen to 353. A figure that during the year of the pandemic it was possible to reduce to 269 but unfortunately, it is the same one that was marked in 2019.

If we analyze the published data, we can see that of these 353 accidents, 182 have corresponded to motorcycles (which include mopeds and motorcycles of all displacements) with eight deaths and 174 hospitalized. This figure represents 51.56% of the total, which leaves motorcycle drivers in a very bad situation. But it is that if we observe the circumstances of the accidents, only in nine of them the rain was present.

The validation of the B car license, the one with which you can drive motorcycles of up to 125 cc if you are more than three years old, is postulated as another reason why there has been so much accident in Madrid. And it is that the figures reflect that of those 182 accidents, 105 have occurred with a 125 cc motorcycle or moped. Which represents 57.7% of the total.

An overwhelming figure that leaves motorcycles in a very bad place if we compare it with the 27.76% that have marked the 98 total cases of cars, vans and SUVs that have had an accident (with a total balance of 92 hospitalized and 6 deceased) . Interestingly, the number of deaths is very similar (eight compared to six) despite having a protection structure that two-wheelers do not have.

Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV) and bicycles, which have been encouraged so much in the center of large cities, have also seen their accident rate increase, marking 13.59% of the total with the 47 admitted patients who remained in the hospital more 24 hours and a single deceased.

Although the data is alarming for motorcyclists, we cannot establish a real accident rate, since the published data do not establish a comparative framework between the number of trips and the kilometers traveled by each type of vehicle. What we can infer from the study is that two-wheelers and their occupants continue to be the most vulnerable on the road and special attention should be paid to their care.
