Xiaomi puts underpants with space technology on sale: the scientific explanation behind the curious offer from the Chinese company

Although Xiaomi is known worldwide for having begun to unseat the competition in the mobile phone sector, it also offers some products that have nothing to do with technology, at least in part.

If you thought you'd seen it all, you probably haven't visited Xiaomi's e-commerce store, the Xiaomi Youpin, something similar to Amazon or eBay, albeit in Mandarin Chinese.

This page for ecommerce offers everything from smart lamps and showers to technological products to improve the quality of life of its users.

Thus, in one of its latest launches, Xiaomi has put on sale some somewhat special underpants, as well as spatial. As detailed in the description of this product, its technology has been tested in space, "so you can enjoy it on Earth."

Made with Space Technology, thanks to Outlast, a German brand certified by The Space Foundation since 2013, these briefs are perfect for maintaining a constant temperature in spermatocytes.

And, although it may seem silly, the Chinese brand has developed this product, basing its premises on a study published in the scientific journal Current Biology.

The scientific basis behind the space underpants

The reality is that Xiaomi has not offered these underpants as a joke or joke, but has based its product on a need, that of guaranteeing the quality of the spermatocyte DNA.

According to a study published last year in Current Biology magazine, a scientific article that Xiaomi mentions in the product information, post-meiotic sperm are especially susceptible to heat stress.

This means that acute exposure to heat stress seriously impairs male fertility and, consequently, the quality of life of wearers of other types of underpants.

"Taken together, our data suggest that spermatocytes are less tolerant of higher temperatures due to an inability to effectively repress the movement of specific mobile DNA elements that cause excessive DNA damage and genome disruption, which can affect fertility," the University of Oregon researchers explained in the study.

For this reason, Xiaomi has offered these space underpants, to guarantee a constant and not very high temperature, with the aim of protecting the quality of the spermatocytes of its consumers.

The item is available in different colors –mist blue, smoky ash and black– and can be had for 99 yuan (12.66 euros).
